In order to protect Israeli civilians from attacks by the terrorist organization Hamas, the IDF lawfully enforces a naval blockade on the Gaza Strip. Given previous attempts by the terrorist organization in smuggling weapons via land and sea and the inherent difficulties in conducting inspections at sea, it is critical that Israeli forces inspect all goods and material marked for Gaza prior to their transfer into the Strip. Hundreds of peaceful demonstrators against the massacre of the ships to Gaza were brutally attacked by Greek police, outside the Israeli embassy in Athens, on Monday, May 31st, 2010. The demonstrators were peacefully retreating to avoid the dense cloud of police tear gas, when police bully-riders tried to attack the crowd. The result was many injured demonstrators and several arrests. The police behaviour was paradigmatically foolish. They managed to set up a riot where no riot was about to begin. May 31st 2010, heavily armed Israeli commandos attacked a Turkish humanitarian aid vessel in international waters. The vessel, Mavi Marmara, was one of 6 ships that set out as a flotilla to deliver aid to Palestinians in Gaza. According to a UN report, “Nine passengers lost their lives and many others were wounded as a result of the use of force during the take-over operation by Israeli forces.” Israel has not had settlements or military forces in Gaza since 2005. Yet it still asserts control over Gaza’s airspace and coastline. On that day, 700 unarmed peace activists were on board the boat. Including writers, journalists, women and children “I was hiding in a room with my child. The gun shots were landing down right on top of the ceiling. Helicopters were also landing and taking off. May 31 2010, Israeli commandos have stormed a ship, which was part of a flotilla carrying aid to Gaza, killing 10 people on board. Israel described the convey as 'an armada of hate' and said that its troops were fired on first, but witnesses on board affirmed that they were no shooting at the troops.
The organisers of a Libyan aid ship bound for Gaza say it's been confronted by an Israeli military vessel and ordered to change its course for Egypt. They also say the boat - called 'Hope' - is refusing to alter its destination and will continue to head to the Palestinian territory. The Israeli vessel is reportedly continuing to shadow the ship, after the country insisted it would not allow it to break the three-year Gaza blockade.
